What makes a pregnancy high-risk
“High-risk” does not mean something will go wrong. It means the pregnancy benefits from being watched more closely, because a condition in the mother, the baby or a previous pregnancy raises the chance of complications.

Common reasons for closer care
- Gestational diabetes, or diabetes before pregnancy
- High blood pressure or pre-eclampsia
- Thyroid disease
- Twin or multiple pregnancy
- Complications in a previous pregnancy, such as miscarriage, preterm birth or a caesarean
- Pregnancy at an older maternal age

Visits are scheduled around your condition rather than a fixed calendar, with blood pressure, blood sugar and other results tracked over time.
Growth scans
Ultrasound scans check your baby's growth and wellbeing. They are arranged on site, so the results are discussed at the same visit.
A plan for delivery
The timing and type of delivery are planned ahead with the reasons explained. Deliveries take place in hospital.

Is my pregnancy high-risk?
Only an assessment can say. Tell the doctor about any medical conditions, the medicines you take and what happened in earlier pregnancies — that history is usually what decides it.
Will I need a specialist hospital?
Many high-risk pregnancies are managed with closer antenatal care and a planned delivery in hospital. If your situation needs more than that, you will be told plainly and referred.
Can gestational diabetes be managed?
Usually, yes — through diet, regular monitoring and, when needed, medication, with the plan adjusted as the pregnancy progresses.
