Understanding PCOS
Polycystic ovary syndrome — PCOS, often called PCOD — is one of the most common hormonal conditions in women. It affects periods, ovulation, skin and hair, can make conceiving harder, and is linked with insulin resistance, which is why weight and blood sugar are part of the picture.
There is no single test for PCOS. The diagnosis comes from your symptoms, an examination, blood tests and often a pelvic ultrasound, all of which can be arranged at Sharada's Urban Clinic.
Signs worth getting checked
- Periods that are irregular, infrequent or absent
- Weight gain, or difficulty losing weight
- Acne or oily skin that persists
- Excess hair on the face or body
- Thinning hair on the scalp
- Difficulty getting pregnant

Treatment follows your goal
Regular periods, easing symptoms, protecting long-term health or planning a pregnancy — the plan depends on which of these matters most to you.
How PCOS is managed
From diagnosis to a plan
Assessment
A detailed history, an examination, hormone and blood sugar tests, and an ultrasound where it helps — to confirm PCOS and rule out other causes.
Lifestyle and medicine
Diet, activity and weight changes make a real difference, and medication can regulate periods and ease acne and hair growth.
Planning a pregnancy
If you want to conceive, ovulation can be supported and tracked, with further fertility care discussed if it is needed.
Questions
PCOS questions
Is PCOS the same as PCOD?
In everyday use in India the two terms are used for the same condition, and it is assessed and managed the same way.
Can I get pregnant with PCOS?
Many women with PCOS conceive — some naturally, some with help to ovulate. Being assessed early gives you the clearest picture of your options.
Will I have to lose weight?
For women carrying extra weight, even a modest loss can improve periods and ovulation. It is advice that helps, not a condition of treatment.
